Zion-Friedheim Evangelical Lutheran Church

Welcome!  We are glad you have chosen to worship with us this morning.  If you are a guest, we ask that you sign one of our guest registries, found in either entranceway of the church.   If you are communing, take a moment to complete a communion registration card.  Cards can be found in either entranceway of the church and may be placed in the offering plate or given to one of the Deacons.   Come back and worship with us again soon.

“The One Thing Needed” – Luke 10:38-42

Mary and Martha have Jesus for a meal in their home.  Martha is distracted with much serving.  What can be gleaned from this conversation?

1.       Only one thing is needed.

2.       Mary chose what is better.

3.       It will not be taken away from her.

Statement of Communion Practice

We believe that in the Lord’s Supper we receive the true Body and Blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in, with, and under the bread and wine.  We welcome to our Altar all who share this belief and are fellow members of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.  If you are communing with us for the first time, please speak to one of the Deacons or Pastor Dahling.

We remember our members who are celebrating birthdays this week—Mike Miller, Gene Kiess, Ron Bultemeier, April Erxleben, Drew Heckman, Jacob Bergman, Kristin Scheumann, Izaak Bobay (his first), Gabrielle Brandt, Emma Buuck, Nick Linnemeier, and Hannah Timm.  May our loving Savior direct, bless, and guide their lives.

May the Great Physician grant health and strength to all who are in need of His healing hand.  We especially remember in our prayers Helen Erxleben, Margaret Buuck who was scheduled to return home this past weekend after a stay at Adams Memorial, and Troy Sinar (Dick & Donna Hileman’s nephew).

We rejoice with Brian & Kristie Schlemmer who are celebrating their 1st wedding anniversary today.  May our loving Father continue to bless this couple and remain at the heart of their home.

This morning we welcome into membership through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism Josh & Nikole (Neely) Melcher’s twins, Clara June and Jake Crosby, who were born on February 18.  Serving as their godparents are Jessica Melcher and Chris Zabolcki.  May the Good Shepherd keep an ever-watchful eye on these most precious of His lambs.

We remember those who are serving our country—Brian Moeller who is in Iraq, Jason Putteet, Cam Koldyke (Audra’s husband), our reservists, Josh, Zach, and Jacob Stoppenhagen, Mike Brandt, Cody Kiess (grandson of Gene & Irene Kiess), Josh Colwell (Tiffany’s husband), and Brian Journay (grandson of Dick & Alma Miller), as well as Justin Grant (Shirley Buuck’s nephew) and Lydia Reynolds (niece of Dick & Donna Hileman) who are in Afghanistan, Randy McAllister (Fern Riemke’s son and brother of Kim, Terry, and Julie) who is serving in Germany, and Aaron Allen and Toney Hempel (Lucile Stoppenhagen’s grandsons), who are both deployed in Iraq.  May the Lord protect and guide them in their missions.

The flowers on the altar are to the glory of God and in honor of the 25th wedding anniversary of Kent & Shelly Kiefer on Monday, July 30, having been placed in church, with much love, by their children.  Kim and Roz Schamerloh will celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary on Monday, July 30.  Their children and grandson have placed flowers in church in their honor this morning.  Jim & Ann Crosby have also placed flowers in church to honor the baptism of their great grandchildren, Clara and Jake.  May the Lord bless each of these families, guiding and protecting them, and remaining at the heart of their homes.

Included in this morning’s bulletin is our weekly study guide, “Time in the Word.”  This week’s theme is “Persistent Prayer.”

Board of Stewardship’s Food for Thought – Contentment is determined by what is inside of us, not the circumstances around us.  While short-term happiness comes to us when our circumstances are free from problems and times are pleasant, we soon discover that this happiness is fleeting and superficial.  As soon as the conditions change, the shallow contentment that we enjoyed will disappear.  Even in the midst of good times, we will often experience a nagging hunger or emptiness that demands to be filled.  The philosopher Pascal wrote, “There is within every man a God-shaped emptiness that only He can fill.”  In Christ alone we will find peace, inner joy, comfort, happiness, and contentment.  “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.  Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For My yoke is easy and My burden is light” (Matthew 11:238-30).  Psalm 46:1 promises, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”  He carries us through life’s heartaches and frustration even though our circumstances may not change.  Only our relationship with Christ can make us content regardless of what life around us may offer.

Council Members:  The minutes of the July 3 Council Meeting are in your slots in the entranceway of the church.  You may pick them up as you leave the worship service this morning.  The next Council meeting will be held on Tuesday, August 7, at 8 p.m. in the church basement.

The regular season concludes this Tuesday, July 31, with a game at 7 p.m. against Soest at Hoagland Firemen’s Park.  The end-of-season tourney is scheduled to start this Saturday, August 4.  No information was available as the bulletin was being printed.  Any questions, you can contact Jason Buuck (413-0702).

You can still register to be a “Volunteer for Riley Kids” by working at the Indianapolis Air Show on August 25 and 26.  There are volunteer registration forms in either entranceway of the church, which are due by Tuesday, July 31

Ladies, your LWML mites can be given at any time.   You may either place your mite envelope in the offering plate or give the envelope to Cindy Wass, the LWML treasurer.  Have you wondered what programs your mites sponsor?  Your mites are used to support 18 mission projects.  Three more of these projects include programs to provide education to Muslims in Bangladesh, support of a “circuit rider” pastor in rural northwest South Dakota, and support of an inner-city children’s ministry in Minneapolis-St. Paul.

Betty Sielschott is our coordinator for the “Meals of Grace” program for the month of July.  Contact her at 724-3946 if you know of someone who could benefit from this ministry.  Christine Bultemeier (639-6332) will be the coordinator for August.

Pat Buuck and Tina Geels are on Altar Guild for August.  Chris & Matt Gorman will be youth ushers for August.

Just a reminder neither the Busy Women’s Bible Class nor the Monday Night Bible Class will meet on July 30 because of the Wyneken Association meeting.  The Monday Night Bible Class will not meet on August 6 either, but will resume on the 13th.

At the 9 a.m. service on Sunday, August 5, St. Paul (Preble) will celebrate the 25th anniversary of Rev. Dr. Daniel Brege in the ministry.  Our congregation is invited to attend.  Rev. Dr. Dean Wenthe, president of the Ft. Wayne Seminary, will be the guest speaker.  Refreshments will be served in the Fellowship Hall following the worship service.

Dorothy Heckman will be the hostess for the August 9 LWML Bible Class that begins at 9 a.m.

LYF Members:  Elephant ears will be sold at the Poe Festival on August 24 and 25 from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. each day.  Please call Mike or Denise Conrad (547-4717) and tell them which 2-hour shift you would like to work on either day.  Thanks!

Don’t forget to call the church office (547-4248) with your confirmation verse.  We don’t have that information for anyone who was confirmed in the years 1927-1929, 1944-1952, and 1968-1972.  For those who have already given us this information, thanks for your help!

The information sheets about cell phone numbers and E-mail addresses need to be returned by August 5, if possible.  Thanks to those who have already returned them.  This information will be very helpful.

Sporting News

A basketball open gym for both boys and girls in grades 4 on up is being held at Wyneken on Sundays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.  Open gym will be held until the start of soccer this fall.  There will be no open gym on holiday weekends or as announced at open gym.

Do you like being around young people?  Do you like soccer?  If you can answer, “Yes,” to both these questions, would you please consider coaching Wyneken soccer?  Both boys’ teams, JV (4th –6th graders) and varsity (7th-8th graders), are in need of coaches.  If you are interested in serving in this volunteer position, please contact Tammy Shoup (724-9069) as soon as possible.  Practices usually begin in mid-August.
