The Sermon

“Bargaining with God” – Genesis 18:22-32
Can you bargain with God…

  1.   when you have a genuine need?
  2.   when you appeal for the sake of others?
  3. when you are reasonable?
The Acolyte Mike Buuck

+ Soli Deo Gloria +

We remember our members who will celebrate birthdays this week—Bonnie Buuck, Eldora Fuelling, Roger Manley, Chad Baumann, Nina Secaur, Patty Strickler, Brian Bergdall, Bernice Berning, and Ruth Hartmann. May our loving Savior direct, bless, and guide their lives.

May the Great Physician grant health and strength to all who are in need.   We remember in our prayers Hildegard Kiefer who was a patient at Adams County and is now in extended care at Adams County, Larry Fuhrmann (husband of our kindergarten teacher, Rae Fuhrmann) who underwent surgery this past week and remains a patient at Parkview, and Bryan Miller who is a patient at Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis.

We remember Julie Heckman and Keith Bock in our prayers as they were married yesterday afternoon in Columbia City.  May the Lord richly bless this couple as they begin their life together.

We pray that the Lord comforts the family and friends of Adelbert Conrad, father of Les Conrad and brother of Marvin and Waldo Conrad, who was called to his heavenly home on Sunday, August 1, and was given Christian burial on Friday, August 6.  May those that mourn be reminded of that great day when they will be reunited with their loved ones in heaven.

Included in this morning’s bulletin is our weekly study guide, “Time in the Word.”   This week’s theme is “Possessed by Possessions.”

Tune in to the Lutheran Hour next Sunday.  The show airs on Sunday on WLW (700) out of Cincinnati at 7 a.m. and on Van Wert stations WERT (1220) and WKSD (99.7 FM) at 10:30 a.m.  (With the time change, you may wish to double-check the times of the Ohio programs.)  The program airs on Sunday at 8:05 a.m. on WZBD (92.7 FM) and then on WFCV (1090 AM) at 3:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.

Stewardship Committee’s Food for Thought:  “God loves a cheerful giver.”  Have you ever thought about that statement and tried to analyze your own feelings regarding giving of anything whether it’s time, skills, work, or money?  The precise translation from Greek of the word “cheerful” is “hilarious.”  How many of us give anything with “hilarity?”

Have you ever tuned in to “Issues, Etc.” that airs LIVE on Sunday evenings from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. on WLYV (1450 AM) in Fort Wayne and on a tape-delay basis on Sunday evenings from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. on WFCV (1090 AM) in Fort Wayne?     This week’s topic is “Prayer: Is God Listening?” with the discussion led by Dr. Andrew Steinmann of Concordia University, River Forest, Illinois.

The Lutheran Circuit V FastPitch GOLF outing will be held on Sunday, August 15, at the Grey Goose Gold Club in Decatur.  The event begins with a shotgun start at 1 p.m.  The cost is $40 per person (with four per team).  You can contact Todd Busick at 223-1834, Dean Fuelling at 724-9331, or Steve Conrad for more information.

The Soest FastPitch Softball team is sponsoring a square dance on Friday, August 13, at the Hoagland Hayloft (fully air-conditioned).  Doors open at 7:30 p.m. with music by Justus III from 8:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.  The cost is $5 per person and includes snacks.

The newsletters were mailed on Thursday, July 29, but many have not yet received them.  The Decatur post office is trying to find out what happened after the newsletters left their site.  If you have internet access, you can log on to our website (www.zionfriedheim.org) and look at the August newsletter there.  There are also a few copies in either entranceway of the church.  Your patience is appreciated.

The Altar Guild will have their quarterly meeting this Tuesday, August 10, at 7:30 p.m.  New members are always welcome.

Wyneken News

Did you know that last year the SCRIP program gave PTL over $19,000?  We hope that you continue to support the SCRIP program this year.  There are two new vendors on the SCRIP list—Autozone and Ritz Camera (both are available in $25 certificates).  Applebee’s has also returned!  You can purchase $20 certificates for this restraunt.  Don’t forget to get your SCRIP this morning from Kim Weiland, our SCRIP representative.  You can see her following the worship service. You can also E-mail scrip@wyneken.org and place your order.

Wyneken Memorial Lutheran School has a Pre-Kindergarten program for three- and four-year olds.  Currently the three-year old class meets on Tuesday and Thursday mornings with the four-year olds meeting on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings.  Mrs. Deb Olson is our teacher for these Pre-Kindergarten classes.  If you know people who might be interested in our Pre-K program, please have them contact the school office (639-6177) or Mrs. Deb Olson as soon as possible.  We will need to decide shortly if we will need to have two sessions for our four-year-old class.

Information about the Wyneken extended childcare program is also available in the entranceway.  If enough families so desire, the three and four year old Pre-K students will also be able to utilize this program.  If you have question, you may contact a school board member or Tami Schultz, director of the childcare program.

Registration Day is Tuesday, August 10, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The first day of school is Monday, August 23 (half day).  School will dismiss at 12:25 p.m.  There will be morning bus service but no bus service in the afternoon for all students.  Parents, if you will need to use the extended childcare program for Monday afternoon, please contact Tami Schultz (547-4540) prior to the 23rd.
