The Rite of Confirmation

After the Confirmands receive the blessing, we ask the congregation to stand and join in a prayer of commitment to Jesus Christ.  As we think of the day when we spoke our vows, may this confession renew our faith that we might more diligently and faithfully serve Him and walk in His ways.

The Pledge of Commitment to Christ
(in unison)

Lord Jesus Christ, our Savior and King, we look to You today, as we pledge ourselves anew to the faith and work of Your kingdom.  Forgive our failures of the past, and enable us by the power of Your Holy Spirit to lift anew our hearts and our minds, that we may constantly serve You and love You, as You have served and loved us.  Dear Savior, accept our hearts this day, and make them always Yours.  Amen.

Confirmation

May God show you favor
And smile on you, I pray,
And bless your confirmation,
On this, your special day.

May you never waiver,
Where the scriptures are concerned,
And always keep within your heart
These lessons you have learned.

Take all your problems to the Lord
And in Him confide
And in trials and temptations,
May He always be your guide.

As you mature in Christ,
May you grow strong in every way
And continue the life you’ve started
On this your confirmation day.

We especially remember our confirmands this morning—Becky Blomenberg, Kyle Brodbeck, Jordan Buuck, Rachelle Buuck, Gabby Cale, April Erxleben, James Fuhrmann, Shayla Lee, Emma Lichtle, Chase McAllister, Carley Manley, and Ivy Mourey.  We pray that their faith will continue to grow.

May the Great Physician grant health and strength to all who are in need.  We especially remember in our prayers Clarence Bultemeier who has returned home, Lucile Stoppenhagen who is a patient at Bluffton Regional Medical Center, and Shelly Kiefer’s grandfather who underwent open heart surgery this past week.

We rejoice with Gerhard and Dorothy Werling who will celebrate their 53rd wedding anniversary on Wednesday, May 5, and Richard and Margaret Buuck who will celebrate their 61st wedding anniversary on Saturday, May 8.  May the Lord continue to bless these couples.

We remember in our prayers our fieldworkers who received their vicarage assignments this past week—Keith Reeder who will serve St. John Lutheran Church in Topeka, Kansas, Troy Scroggins who will serve Redeemer Lutheran Church in Fort Worth, Texas, and Kyle Wright who will serve both St. Paul Lutheran in Coldwater, Michigan and Prince of Peace in Quincy, Michigan—and those who received their first call—Tim Daub who will serve both St. Paul in Bridger, Montana and St. John’s in Belfrey, Montana, Mark Sedwick who will be the missionary at large for the Hispanic population working out of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Ft. Wayne, and Eric Brown who will be at Zion Lutheran in Lahoma, Oklahoma.  God’s blessings upon each of you as you begin this phase of your ministry.

Included in this morning’s bulletin is our weekly study guide, “Time in the Word.”   This week’s theme is “The Newness of the Resurrection.”

Tune in to the Lutheran Hour next Sunday.  The show airs on Sunday on WLW (700) out of Cincinnati at 7 a.m. and on Van Wert stations WERT (1220) and WKSD (99.7 FM) at 10:30 a.m.  (With the time change, you may wish to double-check the times of the Ohio programs.)  The program airs on Sunday at 8:05 a.m. on WZBD (92.7 FM) and then on WFCV (1090 AM) at 3:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.

Stewardship Committee’s Food for Thought:  Greed is evident in our society in terms of storage—putting money aside that will never be used, primarily because it brings a feeling of security.  Consider this verse:  “There is a grievous evil which I have seen under the sun; riches being hoarded by their owner to his hurt.” – Ecclesiastes 5:13

Have you ever tuned in to “Issues, Etc.” that airs LIVE on Sunday evenings from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. on WLYV (1450 AM) in Fort Wayne and on a tape-delay basis on Sunday evenings from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. on WFCV (1090 AM) in Fort Wayne?

There will be a door collection for the Gideons next Sunday, May 9.

Council Members:  The minutes of the April 6 Council Meeting are in your slots in the entranceway of the church.  The Elders will meet on Monday, May 3, at 8 p.m. with the Council Meeting set for Tuesday, May 4, at 8 p.m.

The men’s softball team will begin their season the week of May 23.  Watch the bulletin for further information about pre-season practices.  Contact Steve Conrad if you want to participate.  New players and past players are always welcome to join!

Parents of the Confirmation Class of 2005:  The proofs have arrived.  You may pick them up in the church basement this morning.

Gardeners:  Remember as you make your plans for your vegetable garden to keep in mind our mission project.  We will be donating any extra produce to “Second Chance,” a ministry for women in Ft. Wayne.  Think about what “extras” you might want to plant that will help feed these women and their children.  When you have “extras,” you can bring the items to the back of the church basement entrance towards the end of the week or on Sunday mornings.  We have someone who has volunteered to deliver the produce.

There will be another Orphan Grain Train clothing, shoes, and bedding collection this year on May 7 & 8 at the parking lot of Zion Lutheran Church in Decatur.  Kitchenware and small appliances (packed for shipping) will also be accepted.  Collection times are Friday from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The bulletin will be printed on Thursday for the next two weeks.  Please have any announcements to the church office by 8 a.m. on Thursday.  Thanks!

Wyneken News

Zesto in Decatur is open!  You can purchase SCRIP in $5 denominations and go and get an ice cream cone!  Just by buying your groceries, gas, and maybe some fast food with SCRIP, Wyneken can receive $400 for the year!  For example, if you purchase $100 a week in grocery certificates this translates into a $312 (for the year) that Wyneken receives, add to that gas at $15 a week ($23 yearly profit), and fast food at $15 week (a $78 profit for the year).  These purchases don’t cost you anything out of the pocket—it just takes a moment.  Why not give SCRIP a try?  SCRIP is available on Friday afternoons at Wyneken as well as on Sunday mornings.  Kim Weiland is our SCRIP representative.  You can see her following the worship service. You can also E-mail scrip@wyneken.org and place your order.

Market Day Internet orders are due by noon on Saturday, May 1.  Pick-up day is Thursday, May 6, 6:30 p.m.- 7:30 p.m.    Items on special this month include marinated sirloin roast, Quencherz variety pack, peas, potato skins, French dip, fruit singles, and Bagel-ers.  There are also quite a few new items.  Check out the brochure and place an order!  If you cannot pick up your order on the 6th, just prepay (cash or check made payable to Market Day or prepay for Internet orders by using your VISA) and arrangements can be made.  If you have any questions, please contact Sharon Franke (623-3992).

April and May chapel offerings will be given to Lutheran World Relief to help poor families in Krygyzstan.  The offerings will be used to help these families purchase sheep, cows, and chickens, for their community farms and thus help provide food, employment, and clothing.  So far the offerings have helped to purchase two sheep and money has been put towards the purchase of a horse.  Thank you!

The Wyneken 8th grade class of 2005 will be having a chicken BBQ on Mother’s Day, May 9, from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.  Pre-sale tickets cost $4 per chicken half are still available this morning.  You may purchase your tickets from Anna Buuck, Mike Buuck, Chris Gorman, James Gorman, Andrea Johnson, or Kevin Schultz.

You can still purchase gift certificates for hanging baskets, geraniums, and flats from Sandpoint Greenhouse when it is convenient for you to get your plants.  You can also mix and match your flats this way.  There is an expiration date on the certificates of May 31, 2004; however.  If you ordered your flat to be delivered to Wyneken, you may pick up your order on Saturday, May 8, between 8:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.  Some extra plants will also be available on Saturday (as well as gift certificates).  If you wish to make a purchase, you can contact any Wyneken 7th grader (see above).  The profits from each of these fundraisers will go towards their Washington, DC trip in the spring of 2005.

Wyneken will have early dismissal on Monday, May 10, at 12:25 p.m.  Students riding on North Adams busses will have bus transportation.  Students riding East Allen busses will need to find transportation home.  If you will need to use the Extended Care services for the afternoon, please call Tami Schultz at 639-6064.

The Hot Lunch Committee is looking for a volunteer to take over the duties of treasurer.  The person who takes this position will be responsible for maintaining the daily lunch count also.  Please call Dawn Buuck (724-7952) if you are interested in this position.

The PTL Food and Beverage Committee is in need of a parent or parents to take over this position.  You would be in responsible for organizing bake sales during programs, provide food/drinks for meetings (PTL, faculty), parent/teacher conferences, and other events.  You can contact Kelly Todd, current committee person, or any PTL officer—Cam Nelson, Tom DeBolt, Linda Kleine, or Brian Hartman—if you are interested.

If you were unable to make North Adams kindergarten round up, there are information packets to be picked up in the school office.  These forms need to be completed and returned by Wyneken’s school registration in August.

A retirement luncheon for Mrs. Donna Schieferstein is scheduled for Sunday, May 16.  The open house will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a catered meal (serving begins at 11:00.m.) and concludes with a presentation to Mrs. Schieferstein at 12:15.m.  All are invited to attend.
