ZION EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH, FRIEDHEIM

"Jesus, Jesus, Only Jesus"

Pentecost Sunday
May 23, 1999

+ In Nomine Jesu +

The Ringing of the Church Bell

The Invocation

P: In the Name of the Father, (+) and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.

C: AMEN.

P: ***Father, we thank You for all Your good gifts. Your Son offers to us the water of new life, a well-spring that never runs dry. Your Spirit offers us the fire of dedicated discipleship, a flame that never dies. We are a weak and forgetful people. Replenish our joy from the well-spring of new life! Rekindle our dedication with the flame of the Holy Spirit.

C: COME HOLY SPIRIT, COME.

P: Let us humble ourselves before the throne of Almighty God, confess our sins, and implore His forgiveness.

C: ALMIGHTY AND MOST MERCIFUL FATHER, WE HAVE ERRED AND STRAYED FROM THY WAYS LIKE LOST SHEEP. WE HAVE FOLLOWED TOO MUCH THE DEVICES AND DESIRES OF OUR OWN HEARTS. WE HAVE OFFENDED AGAINST THY HOLY LAWS. WE HAVE LEFT UNDONE THOSE THINGS WHICH WE OUGHT TO HAVE DONE: AND WE HAVE DONE THOSE THINGS WHICH WE OUGHT NOT TO HAVE DONE: AND THERE IS NO HEALTH IN US. BUT THOU, O LORD, HAVE MERCY UPON US, MISERABLE OFFENDERS. SPARE THOU THOSE, O GOD, WHO CONFESS THEIR SINS. RESTORE THOSE WHO ARE PENITENT;

ACCORDING TO THY PROMISE DECLARED UNTO MANKIND, IN CHRIST JESUS OUR LORD. AND GRANT, O MERCIFUL FATHER, FOR HIS SAKE, THAT WE MAY HEREAFTER LIVE A GODLY, RIGHTEOUS, AND SOBER LIFE, TO THE GLORY OF THY HOLY NAME. AMEN.

P: Come, receive His Holy Spirit, which cleanses, heals, empowers each of us to new life. Wake up afresh, for God has come alive in you. You have been forgiven! In the Name of the Father, (+) and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.

C: AMEN.

The Confession of Faith (the explanation of the Third Article)

I BELIEVE THAT I CANNOT BY MY OWN REASON OR STRENGTH BELIEVE IN JESUS CHRIST, MY LORD, OR COME TO HIM; BUT THE HOLY GHOST HAS CALLED ME BY THE GOSPEL, ENLIGHTENED ME WITH HIS GIFTS, SANCTIFIED, AND KEPT ME IN THE TRUE FAITH; EVEN AS HE CALLS, GATHERS, ENLIGHTENS AND SANCTIFIES THE WHOLE CHRISTIAN CHURCH ON EARTH, AND KEEPS IT WITH JESUS CHRIST IN THE ONE TRUE FAITH; IN WHICH CHRISTIAN CHURCH HE DAILY AND RICHLY FORGIVES ALL SINS TO ME AND ALL BELIEVERS, AND WILL, AT THE LAST DAY RAISE UP ME AND ALL THE DEAD, AND GIVE UNTO ME AND ALL BELIEVERS IN CHRIST ETERNAL LIFE. THIS IS MOST CERTAINLY TRUE!
