Accelerated Reader (AR)
is designed to help focus
attention on careful reading of books, which improves students’
critical-thinking skills and builds the intrinsic
love of reading.
Three different types of assessment are used to give
valuable data on students’ reading practice, literacy
skills
development, and performance on classroom assignments.
Students can be continually matched to appropriate books
within their zone of proximal
development (ZPD). That
means every student can be challenged without being frustrated.
Wyneken maintains a large and ever expanding bank of quizzes at
all levels of reading. Our library is working to
keep an inventory of books that are aligned with our AR
quiz bank.
Goals are created to further motivate students to read. Students can strive for three main goals. The first goal
is
the presentation of a medal acknowledging reading success. The
second goal is a end of year trip to Dairy Queen for a sundae on
Principal Timm. Our third goal is
a trip to Pizza
Hut for a pizza on Mr. Timm.
In addition, Wyneken maintains an AR Store where
students may use their accumulated points to make purchases.
Individual classrooms also have motivational goals to
achieve as a class.
